Two suspected mobile money fraudsters luckily escaped death as they were nearly lynched at Awutu Bereku market in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region after they succeeded in defrauding three persons of an amount of Ghc11,750. A former Russian prison service official shot himself dead in a courtroom after being handed a three-year sentence on corruption charges. Local court and investigative officials said Viktor Sviridov, who had served as chief of department in the federal prison service, took out his pistol and shot himself dead in the courtroom after hearing the verdict. Officials are now looking at how Sviridov was able to bring the gun into the court building. Russia’s top Investigative Agency said that it would examine the court’s safety regime. Sviridov was convicted of extorting a 10-million ruble ($160,000) bribe. Sviridov pleaded guilty to the charges and his lawyers asked the judge not to send him to prison. He had been requested not to leave Moscow and came to attend the sentencing from home.

During her free time, Nigerian Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem controls traffic in the capital, Abuja, eight years after her son was killed in a hit-and-run accident. "Many Nigerians are impatient and it shows in their driving," She told the BBC. She does not know who is responsible for her son's death but wants to tackle some of the poor driving she witnessed. She started going to bus stations to speak to drivers about road safety in Nigeria, and what she found shocked her. A 12-year-old boy has been crushed to death at a road construction site in Zebilla in the Upper East Region. A pick-up vehicle belonging to the Brazillian construction firm, Queiroz Galvao, was said to be reversing when it crushed the boy who was crossing the Bolgatanga Bawku – Pulmakom road at the customs barrier area on a bicycle. The back tyre of the vehicle crushed the boy’s head, killing him instantly. A mother, 18, has been arrested in Jigawa state for allegedly killing her 1-day-old baby boy. The suspect, a resident of Dandabi village, reportedly had the baby from an unwanted pregnancy. She then connived with her stepmother, who is now on the run, to bury the corpse of the baby. Neighbours became suspicious when they noticed the woman was no longer pregnant but there was no baby in sight. The police were alerted and they arrested the suspect and questioned her. Their investigation revealed that on January 31, the suspect's stepmother took her to a house where she was injected by a medical personnel who is now also on the run. The day after she was injected, the teen mom gave birth to a baby boy and he was reportedly killed and buried in a bush in Ringim Local Government Area of the state. A 51-year old man has been burnt to death and four others also got various degrees of burns through electrocution by a live electric cable at the Atebubu yam market in the Bono East Region. A strong whirlwind blew an umbrella and other objects unto a high tension electric pole and a power line on it sparked fire and fell to the ground and electrocuted the five people when they accidentally walked on it. The social media giants Facebook and Twitter have declined US Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s request to delete a video of her tearing up her copy of Trump’s speech at the State of the Union Address on Tuesday. The speaker’s office demanded that Facebook remove the video posted online by President Donald Trump, which was edited to make it appear like she ripped the speech even as Trump saluted a Tuskegee airman in the audience. The altered video, titled "Powerful American stories ripped to shreds by Nancy Pelosi", makes it appear as though Pelosi tore up the speech just as the president was introducing Charles McGee. McGee, 100, is one of the last surviving members of the Tuskegee Airmen. He was honored by the president for flying more than 135 combat missions over Europe during the Second World War. An unidentified Nigerian man has been confirmed dead after sleeping with a prostitute during a night out. Eyewitnesses who found sex enhancement drugs at the scene of the incident, suggested that the man must have died after taking them. Recounting her encounter with her dead client, the prostitute, who identified herself simply as Precious, said she was invited over to the lodging facility by the deceased’s friend. Precious disclosed that the man slept all through the night even though she never saw him take the sex pills. She further revealed that they had sex around 5 a.m, after which the man slept off again. However, after she got ready to leave, Precious noticed that the man was still sleeping and she needed her money. She said she suspected foul play at first, but noticed that the man wasn’t still moving after she gave him a nudge. The commercial sex worker said it was at that point she cried out for help. A 55-year-old Ottawa businessman recently shocked a court of law by claiming that he literally burned one million Canadian dollars in cash just to avoid paying his ex-wife child support, as part of their divorce settlement. Bruce McConville told a judge that he withdrew about 1 million Canadian dollars – roughly $750,000 – in 25 separate withdrawals from six separate bank accounts, and burned it all in two separate bonfires, CA$743,000 on Sept. 23 and CA$296,000 on Dec. 15. He claimed to have receipts to prove he withdrew the money, but that no one had seen him actually burn the money, and that the bonfires had not been video taped.
